A 24-year-old Polish woman, Julia Wandelt, was convicted on Friday for cruelly pretending to be missing Madeleine McCann, a UK girl who disappeared at the age of 3 in 2007. Wandelt was found guilty of harassing Kate and Gerry McCann for over two years by claiming to be their missing daughter. She even approached Kate McCann outside her home and sent her a distressing letter addressed to “mum.”

Wandelt was sentenced to six months in prison, the maximum allowed for harassment, which she has already served since her arrest earlier this year. However, she was cleared of the more serious charge of stalking the McCanns, despite her constant pestering and badgering. There was scientific evidence proving she could not be their daughter, who would now be 22 years old.

Karen Spragg, a 61-year-old UK woman who supported Wandelt’s false claims, was also cleared of stalking. The McCanns stated that they hope Wandelt will receive the necessary care and support she needs and that any vulnerability she has will not be exploited by others. They emphasized that their only desire was for the harassment to stop and urged anyone with new information about Madeleine’s disappearance to contact the police.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge acknowledged Wandelt’s difficult upbringing but stated that it did not justify her behavior. Wandelt claimed she never intended to harm the McCanns and felt sympathy for them. She believed she could be the missing girl because they were looking for their child just as she was looking for her parents.

Prosecutors revealed that Wandelt had previously claimed to be two other missing children. Madeleine’s parents continue their campaign to find their daughter, who would now be 22 years old. They issue a statement each year on the anniversary of her disappearance.

The main suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance was released from a German prison in September after serving a seven-year sentence for an unrelated sex crime. The McCanns remain hopeful that one day they will find out what happened to their daughter.
