Man Dies After Shooting at Uptown McDonald’s

A tragic incident unfolded at a McDonald’s in Uptown on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old man.

Randy Joiner, a resident of the first block of East 57th Street, passed away at 5:15 p.m. on Friday, just 90 minutes after being shot, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The shooting occurred while Joiner was seated inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the restaurant located at 1004 West Wilson. Two unidentified men approached the car, with one of them opening fire around 3:45 p.m. Joiner sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.

According to police officers at the scene, the suspects are described as Black males in their late teens. One suspect stood approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a black baseball hat, a dark hoodie over an orange or red t-shirt, and black pants. The second suspect was around 5’7” in height and donned a white hoodie, black pants, and white shoes. After the shooting, both individuals were seen fleeing south on Sheridan Avenue.

It is worth noting that just last Sunday evening, another shooting incident took place in the 4900 block of North Sheridan where two men were shot by three gunmen near Buttercup Park. A 30-year-old man was targeted while inside an apartment building lobby, and a 39-year-old man was shot while walking in the vicinity at approximately 6:14 p.m. However, the motives behind this shooting remain unclear as police did not release any suspect descriptions.

  • 2023: 19 shot, none fatally
  • 2022: 14 shot, 5 fatally
  • 2021: 16 shot, 1 fatally
