Venezuelan Migrant Detained for Attempted Murder After Construction Site Altercation
A Venezuelan migrant working at a construction site in Chicago has been arrested on attempted murder charges for allegedly attacking a coworker with a running concrete saw. The incident occurred at a job site in the 1200 block of South Kedvale Avenue on June 23, according to prosecutors.
Reports state that 26-year-old Augustin Gomes Granadillo engaged in a verbal dispute with a 30-year-old coworker which quickly escalated. Gomes allegedly wielded a shovel, striking the victim before using a concrete block to further assault him. He then grabbed a Stihl masonry saw from the site and swung it at the victim, causing severe injuries.
The victim sustained a deep laceration and fracture to the wrist, as well as a deep laceration wound to the chest as a result of the attack. Gomes was apprehended by the Chicago Police Department following confirmation from the construction project manager that he was present at the site during the altercation.
During a hearing, Judge Rivanda Doss Beal ordered Gomes to be detained, emphasizing the seriousness of the alleged assault. She noted that Gomes fled the scene after harming the victim, indicating a lack of regard for societal norms. Gomes is scheduled to appear in court again next Wednesday to face the charges brought against him.
