Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik expressed his belief that Team India felt the absence of skipper Shubman Gill with the bat on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. Gill, who played only three deliveries before retiring hurt with a neck spasm, did not return to bat as India collapsed to be bowled out for 189. The Indian captain has been in exceptional form in Tests this year, boasting an average of over 70 with five centuries in nine matches.

Reacting to Shubman Gill’s injury, Karthik mentioned on Cricbuzz that Gill was dearly missed on the field. He highlighted how Gill got a boundary and then had to retire hurt due to a neck spasm, which was a result of discomfort he had been feeling earlier. Karthik emphasized the importance of Gill’s presence in the lineup and the impact of his absence on India’s batting performance.

Reflecting on India’s collapse after a solid start, Karthik expressed disappointment at the team’s inability to capitalize on the good start provided by Washington and KL Rahul. He acknowledged the lack of partnerships and the subsequent collapse of the middle and lower order, which has been a recurring issue for the Indian team in recent years.

Despite the batting collapse, India managed to secure a 30-run first-innings lead against South Africa. Karthik also praised Rishabh Pant for his leadership in the absence of Shubman Gill during the second innings. Pant took over captaincy duties behind the wicket and made tactical decisions that helped India’s bowlers dismantle the Proteas’ batting lineup.

Karthik commended Pant for his astute captaincy and highlighted his role in setting up key dismissals, including helping Kuldeep Yadav secure his second wicket. With South Africa facing a deficit of 63 runs and seven wickets down, the visitors are in a precarious position in the first Test.

Overall, Karthik’s analysis of the match highlighted the impact of Shubman Gill’s absence on India’s batting performance and praised Rishabh Pant for his leadership skills in guiding the team to a strong position in the Test match. The former wicketkeeper also pointed out the need for better partnerships and consistency in India’s middle and lower order to avoid collapses in future matches.
