Elena Bardin, a 27-year-old married teacher, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing a 17-year-old inmate at the Adair County Juvenile Detention Center in Kentucky. The jury found her guilty of first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful transaction with a minor for engaging in explicit sexual contact with the teen. Although she was also accused of asking the boy to kill her husband, she was acquitted of that charge.
The disturbing case came to light when a routine search of the teen’s room uncovered 193 sexually explicit letters and photos that Bardin had allegedly sent to him. In one of the letters, she admitted to having sexual contact with the inmate. The judge, Circuit Judge Samuel Spalding, described the content of the letters as “juicy” and inappropriate for a young man of that age. He emphasized that as an educator, Bardin should have set a better example and refrained from engaging in such behavior.
Despite being warned by her supervisor to end the relationship and stay away from the teen, Bardin continued her inappropriate actions. The judge noted that she even intensified her behavior after being advised to stop, which was concerning. The letters not only revealed sexual contact but also a disturbing plan to have the teen murder her husband. However, the victim testified that he never intended to carry out the alleged killing and viewed their relationship as a way to pass the time while he was incarcerated.
During the trial, Bardin did not testify on her behalf. As part of her sentence, she will be required to register as a sex offender for the next 20 years. The judge highlighted the intelligence and articulateness displayed in Bardin’s letters but emphasized the gravity of her actions. The inmate’s testimony shed light on the true nature of their relationship, portraying it as a misguided attempt to alleviate boredom during his time in detention.
