The tragic death of Kit Kat, a beloved neighborhood bodega cat in San Francisco’s Mission District, has sent shockwaves through the community. According to a report by The New York Times, Kit Kat was run over by a Waymo robotaxi on the evening of October 27, sparking an outpouring of grief and calls for accountability.

In response to the incident, locals have come together to create a shrine in memory of Kit Kat. The streets have been adorned with signs, some criticizing Waymo for the accident, while others point out the dangers posed by human drivers. The conflicting messages reflect the ongoing debate surrounding the use of driverless cars in urban areas.

Jackie Fielder, a member of SF’s Board of Supervisors representing the Mission District, has been vocal in advocating for greater oversight of autonomous vehicles. She recently highlighted Kit Kat’s tragic fate while pushing for a city resolution that would give local residents the power to decide whether driverless cars should be allowed to operate in their neighborhoods.

Fielder emphasized the importance of accountability in cases of accidents involving autonomous vehicles. Unlike human drivers who can be held responsible for their actions, she pointed out that there is a lack of accountability when it comes to incidents like Kit Kat’s death. The absence of a human driver to take responsibility for the accident raises concerns about how such incidents should be addressed.

In response to the incident, Waymo expressed its condolences to Kit Kat’s owner and the community. The company explained that the accident occurred when the cat unexpectedly darted under their vehicle as it was moving. Waymo’s co-CEO, who recently spoke about the company’s commitment to safety at a tech conference, stressed that they are deeply saddened by the tragedy.

The death of Kit Kat has reignited the debate over the safety and regulation of autonomous vehicles in urban areas. As the community mourns the loss of a beloved feline resident, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding the adoption of driverless technology in our cities.
