US Healthcare’s Biggest Problem: Overlooking The $5T Gorilla

US Healthcare’s Biggest Problem: Overlooking The T Gorilla

Healthcare in America is facing a crisis that many are failing to see: the invisible gorilla of rising medical costs. Just like in the famous psychology experiment where viewers missed a gorilla walking through a basketball game because they were too focused on counting passes, policymakers, business leaders, and medical societies are missing the bigger picture in healthcare.

The $5.6 trillion spent on healthcare each year in the U.S. exceeds the total GDP of all but a few nations, yet the focus remains on metrics like insurance subsidies, premiums, and enrollment numbers. This tunnel vision is causing us to overlook the real issue at hand: the unsustainable cost of care delivery.

In Washington, lawmakers are locked in debates over funding for healthcare subsidies, with Democrats arguing for affordability and Republicans concerned about the federal deficit. However, both sides are missing the point that unless the underlying cost of medical care is addressed, neither the government nor families will be able to afford it.

Corporate America is also feeling the impact of rising healthcare costs, with the average cost of family health coverage set to reach $30,000 next year. Employers and employees are facing steep premium increases that are limiting wage growth and hindering innovation.

In the workplace, the cost crisis is leading to job losses as companies turn to automation and AI to cut expenses. Workers are at risk of losing their health insurance and turning to government-subsidized plans, further straining the system.

Rural hospitals are particularly hard hit, with many closing or scaling back services due to high fixed costs and low patient populations. Short-term fixes like emergency grants are delaying the inevitable, but long-term solutions are needed to ensure the survival of these essential facilities.

To address the invisible gorilla of rising healthcare costs, structural reforms are necessary. This includes consolidating hospitals, preventing diseases before they happen, and shifting towards a value-based payment system that rewards outcomes over volume.

Ultimately, overcoming inattentional blindness and confronting the gorilla of rising healthcare costs will require a collective effort from all stakeholders. Only by working together can we find sustainable solutions to ensure the future of healthcare in America.
