Exploring the Artistic World of Uman at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

Uman’s artistic practice is a fusion of various disciplines, constantly evolving and pushing boundaries. Her creations span across painting, drawing, murals, mosaic, sculpture, and glass, all grounded in the richness of color and the transformative power of imagery. Drawing inspiration from memories, dreams, and the ever-changing world around her, Uman’s visual language is intricate and intuitive, free-flowing and adaptable. It transcends traditional labels of abstract or metaphorical art, growing from the undefined into the sublime. Her diverse range of influences includes her upbringing in East Africa, her experiences in Europe and the US, and a deep love for textiles and global fashion trends.

Currently on display at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut until May 10, 2026, the exhibition titled Uman: After all the things… showcases a collection of new and recent works by the artist. Featuring paintings, works on paper, video art, and sculpture, Uman’s pieces are a vibrant mix of oil, acrylic, spray paint, oil stick, and elements of collage and sewing. Her compositions are a kaleidoscope of colors and patterns, drawing inspiration from 19th-century French art, surrealism, visionary abstraction, and the natural world. Through energetic mark-making techniques, including the use of dry brushes, fingers, and palms, Uman blurs the lines between painting and drawing, creating visually captivating pieces that invite viewers into a world of creativity and imagination.

Uman: After all the things… is complemented by the artist’s first museum publication, co-published by Gregory R. Miller & Co. The publication includes an essay by the curator, images of the artwork on display, and installation shots, providing a deeper insight into Uman’s artistic journey and creative process.
