Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has introduced a new tool to help creators protect their original work from being stolen by others. The Facebook content protection tool is designed to detect when a creator’s original reels posted on Facebook are being used without permission.

If a creator discovers that someone else is using their reels, they have the option to block the reel’s visibility on both Facebook and Instagram, track its performance, or add attribution links to their work. Alternatively, they can choose to release their claim on the reel, allowing it to remain visible on Meta’s platforms.

The content protection feature is part of Meta’s efforts to support original creators on Facebook and prevent their work from being overshadowed by copycats. In a similar initiative, Meta recently removed around 10 million profiles impersonating large content creators and took action against 500,000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior or fake engagement.

Creators who post their reels on Facebook, including those who use the cross-posting option from Instagram, can benefit from the new content protection system. This move is expected to encourage more creators to share their work on Facebook.

The content protection tool is automatically available to creators in Meta’s Facebook Content Monetization program who meet enhanced integrity and originality standards. Additionally, access to the tool is rolling out to creators using Rights Manager.

Creators can check their eligibility for the tool through notifications in their Feed, Professional Dashboard, or profile. They can also manage how the system flags matches by creating an “allow list” for accounts authorized to use their content.

In cases where another account attempts to protect a creator’s original work, creators can dispute the claim by submitting a copyright takedown request through the IP reporting channel. The default setting for tracking reels is enabled by default to ensure creators can monitor the use of their content.

It’s important to note that blocking a reel may impact its distribution, but the account that used the content will not face disciplinary action. Meta aims to prevent the system from being abused to target specific accounts. Creators who misuse the system by submitting false reports may face restrictions on their accounts or lose access to the content protection tool.

Overall, the new content protection system empowers creators to safeguard their original work on Facebook and Instagram, ensuring that their creative efforts are respected and credited appropriately.
