An Oakland man, Cedric Irving Jr., has been charged with the murder of Laney College football coach John Beam in a targeted assassination. The tragic incident took place on the college campus, where Beam was shot in the head and later succumbed to his injuries.

Irving, a former high school football player, was identified as the shooter through surveillance camera footage and was apprehended by the police. He confessed to the murder and was found in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest. According to reports, Irving believed that Beam was using witchcraft on him and others, leading him to commit the heinous act.

The 27-year-old faces charges of murder and using a gun in the commission of the crime, each carrying a maximum sentence of 25 years to life. He is set to be arraigned on Tuesday. Irving had a fixation on Beam, who was the athletics director at Laney College and had coached at Skyline High School for over two decades. Despite not playing under Beam, Irving was known to frequent the Laney College campus.

The shooting has left the Laney College community devastated, with Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson expressing shock and heartbreak over the violence that has touched the campus. Beam, who joined Laney’s coaching staff in 2004 and was promoted to head coach in 2012, was a respected figure in the community. He was featured in the Netflix series “Last Chance U” in 2020, showcasing his dedication to shaping young athletes on and off the field.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee emphasized the impact of Beam’s mentorship and leadership in the city. She called for an end to gun violence and expressed solidarity with Beam’s loved ones during this difficult time. The incident has underscored the need for safer environments in schools and a collective effort to address the prevalence of guns on the streets.

The loss of Coach John Beam has reverberated through the Oakland community, where he was a pillar of support for countless individuals. His legacy as a mentor and educator will endure, with twenty of his former players having gone on to play in the NFL. The tragic circumstances surrounding his untimely death serve as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to address senseless acts of violence in our society.
