Karin Davie has established herself as a prominent brushstroke painter since the early 1990s, showcasing her mastery in creating series of paintings that embody a distinct linear form. Her unique approach combines elements of Abstract Expressionism and Op Art, creating a visual language that is both captivating and dynamic. In her latest exhibition, “It Comes In Waves,” at the Miles McEnery Gallery, Davie presents a collection of eight tonally monochromatic paintings, six of which are on shaped canvases.

Each painting in the exhibition features horizontal brushstrokes that span the width of the canvas, forming sensuous wavy ribbons that undulate across the surface. One standout piece, “Trespasser 1,” painted on a dark rose ground, showcases a pinkish-rose palette with white accents. The interplay of colors and brushstrokes creates a deep, rounded groove that winds down the surface, drawing the viewer’s eye into a mesmerizing visual experience.

Davie’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the modulation of color and the way each brushstroke partially covers the one before it, creating a sense of depth and movement within the painting. The bands of color transform into a textured terrain, inviting viewers to make associations and seek metaphors in the intricate patterns. Up close, the brushstrokes resemble individual hairs of the paintbrush, adding to the luxurious surface of each band, while from a distance, they form a cohesive topography that mesmerizes the eye.

Despite drawing inspiration from Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and Op Art, Davie’s work remains distinct and original. Her incremental process and unique approach to brushstroke painting have allowed her to create a body of work that feels fresh and timeless. “It Comes In Waves” is a testament to Davie’s artistic vision and her ability to push the boundaries of abstract art.
