'Broken' mom, 27, admits killing young sons days after 72-year-old husband died of cancer

A tragic incident unfolded in Toronto in December 2023, when 27-year-old Vanessa Collias took the lives of her two young sons, Yiannis and Dimitri, just days after her husband, Costa, passed away from leukemia. Overwhelmed by grief and unable to cope with the loss of her husband, Vanessa made a fateful decision that would change her life forever.

After holding her hands over her sons’ mouths and noses while singing “You Are My Sunshine,” Vanessa attempted to take her own life by jumping off the balcony of their apartment. However, she survived the fall but was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Police discovered the bodies of Yiannis and Dimitri lying in front of a TV, with clothes for their funeral laid out beside them. A photo of their late father and a cross were also found in the room, indicating Vanessa’s desperate attempt to reunite her family in heaven.

Initially charged with first-degree murder, Vanessa’s charges were later downgraded to second-degree murder due to the extreme grief she was experiencing. She expressed to a psychiatrist that she felt broken, alone, and unable to imagine a life without her husband, longing for a reunion in the afterlife.

During a court appearance, Vanessa tearfully expressed her love for her sons and her deep regret for her actions. She acknowledged the pain of learning to live without them and the challenges of putting her life back together.

Despite her intentions to save her sons and be with her husband, Vanessa was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 18 years. She recognized the gravity of her actions but hoped for understanding from others who could empathize with her overwhelming grief and despair.

Vanessa’s tragic story serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of loss and the importance of seeking help in times of deep emotional turmoil. Her experience highlights the need for support and understanding for those struggling with grief and mental health challenges, emphasizing the importance of reaching out for assistance in moments of crisis.
