Tesla Receives Ride-Hailing Permit in Arizona for Robotaxi Service

Tesla has been granted a ride-hailing permit by Arizona regulators this week, allowing the automaker to potentially launch a robotaxi service in the state. The Arizona Department of Transportation confirmed that Tesla applied for a Transportation Network Company (TNC) permit on November 13 and has met all the requirements to operate as a TNC. The permit was officially issued on November 17.

Arizona has become a hotspot for autonomous vehicle testing and development, with Waymo being a prominent player in the region. Waymo has been operating a robotaxi service in the Phoenix area since 2018, covering a service area of 315 square miles in the greater Phoenix metro area.

While companies can test autonomous vehicles in Arizona through a self-certification process, operating a ride-hailing service requires a separate TNC permit. Tesla expressed interest in launching a robotaxi service in the Phoenix Metro area and went through the certification process, including testing with and without a safety driver.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has been eyeing Arizona as a key market for the company’s robotaxi service. In addition to Arizona, Tesla has also launched limited robotaxi services in South Austin and California, albeit with certain limitations due to permit restrictions.
