Legendary college football coach John Beam expressed concerns about security on his school campus just days before he was tragically killed in a targeted shooting. The 66-year-old coach, known for his appearance on the popular Netflix series “Last Chance U,” had voiced his worries about the lack of security at Laney College in Oakland during an event called “Taco ‘Bout Safety” on November 12, just two days before his death.

Beam had raised issues about security at the college’s field house, especially after a recent fire and break-in. He mentioned that security contractors had shown him footage of a theft at the field house, but no guard had intervened to recover the stolen items or detain the suspects. He questioned how only six guards could cover four campuses within the Peralta Community College District for 24 hours, highlighting the inadequacy of security measures.

The coach also expressed feeling more vulnerable since armed deputies had stopped protecting the school. Laney College had ended its contract with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in 2020 and had been relying solely on unarmed security guards since then. These concerns about security came to a tragic conclusion on November 13 when Beam was shot in the head on campus and later succumbed to his injuries.

Cedric Irving Jr., 27, was arrested and charged with the targeted killing of Coach Beam. Police identified Irving through campus surveillance footage, and he was apprehended shortly after the incident. Irving allegedly confessed to the crime, claiming that he believed Beam had used black magic on him and others. The suspect had a connection to Beam through Skyline High School, where the coach had previously worked for 22 years.

Despite the arrest, investigators have not disclosed a motive for Beam’s death. Irving’s brother, Samuael Irving, expressed shock at the news and mentioned that his brother had cut ties with the family before the shooting. He recalled that Cedric may have practiced with the Laney football team during his high school years, but details were uncertain.

Coach Beam was highly respected for his dedication to his players and his success in helping them secure opportunities at top-tier schools. He had been a part of Laney College’s football staff since 2004, taking on the role of head coach in 2012. His appearance on “Last Chance U” in 2020 further solidified his reputation, with twenty of his former players going on to play in the NFL.

The tragic loss of Coach Beam has left a void in the Laney College community, with tributes pouring in for the beloved coach who had touched the lives of so many through his mentorship and guidance. As the investigation continues, the legacy of John Beam will endure through the countless players he inspired and the impact he had on the football program at Laney College.
