A 20-year-old man named Jasean Butler has been sentenced to 8 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder for shooting a 16-year-old boy near the Magnificent Mile last year. The incident took place at the corner of Wabash Avenue and Chicago Avenue around 4:45 p.m. on August 2, 2024. Butler fired several shots towards the teen, hitting him in the shoulder, and also injuring a 24-year-old man who was nearby.

The shooting was captured on a Chicago police surveillance camera as well as security cameras at a nearby Chick-fil-A. A CPD surveillance officer who reviewed the footage identified the gunman fleeing onto a southbound Red Line train at the State-Chicago stop. Police were able to intercept the train at Roosevelt and detain Butler, who matched the suspect description. A loaded 9-millimeter handgun was found in a backpack next to him.

On Thursday, Butler agreed to plead guilty to attempted murder in exchange for an 8-year sentence from Judge Michael Clancy. He will have to serve 85% of the term before becoming eligible for release.
