Nine Injured, One Dead in Loop Shooting After Christmas Tree Lighting

During the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the Loop on Friday evening, chaos erupted as gun violence left nine people injured, including one fatality, according to Chicago police. The majority of the victims were children who were caught in the crossfire.

The violent incident took place around 9:50 p.m. outside the Chicago Theatre on State Street. Police officers on patrol witnessed a large altercation on the sidewalk that quickly escalated into gunfire. Seven children were found wounded along State Street, with the suspect described as a Black male wearing specific clothing items.

Among the injured were seven Black children aged between 13 and 17 years old. They were swiftly transported to various hospitals for treatment:

  • A 13-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the leg, in fair condition at Lurie Children’s Hospital.
  • A 14-year-old boy shot in the leg, in good condition at Lurie.
  • A 14-year-old boy with a graze wound to the stomach, in good condition at Lurie.
  • A 14-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the right hip, in good condition at Lurie.
  • A 15-year-old boy with a graze wound to the left thigh, in good condition at Stroger Hospital.
  • A 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the leg, in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
  • A 17-year-old boy with a graze wound to the left thigh, in good condition at Stroger.

Following the initial shooting, further gunshots were reported in the vicinity, resulting in two additional victims on South Dearborn Street. Sadly, one of the victims, an unidentified male, succumbed to his injuries at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The second victim, an 18-year-old man, was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Amid the chaos, Alderman Brian Hopkins shared on social media that “300 juveniles” were causing disturbances in the Loop, leading to injuries to multiple officers. The situation escalated to the point where arrests were made and firearms were recovered.

With this incident, the total number of shootings in the Loop this year has risen to 19, reflecting a concerning trend compared to previous years. The area experienced a spike in shootings during the pandemic, with a significant increase from pre-pandemic levels.
