Transportation Secretary Calls for Civility and Politeness During Busiest Thanksgiving Travel Season

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has urged the public to be more polite and wear nicer attire during what is anticipated to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel season ever. This surge in travel is expected to test people’s patience and tolerance levels.

During a press conference, Duffy emphasized the importance of civility and courteous behavior, particularly in the airspace where incidents of unruly behavior, such as passengers taking their shoes off and putting their bare feet up on the chair ahead of them, have been on the rise. Duffy highlighted the need for individuals to be more aware of their actions and considerate towards others.

While acknowledging that civility cannot be legislated, Duffy stressed the significance of making a conscious effort to improve behavior and interactions. He encouraged passengers to assist each other, especially in tasks like helping with heavy bags, as part of fostering a more respectful travel environment.

Despite previous staffing challenges, Duffy assured the public that airports will be adequately staffed to ensure safety during the busy travel period. The anticipated 31 million passengers flying by air this Thanksgiving underscore the need for efficient operations and heightened vigilance.

Moreover, with an estimated 73 million Americans expected to drive for Thanksgiving, road congestion is also anticipated to be a significant issue. Duffy highlighted the peak travel times and gas prices, emphasizing the need for preparedness and caution during the holiday travel rush.
