The Complexities of Thanksgiving in a Time of Crisis

As the days grow shorter and the year comes to a close, there is a heaviness in the air. Coming back from COP30 in Brazil, where little progress was made in the fight for our climate future, the world is facing a multitude of crises. From authoritarian regimes to environmental degradation, it seems like we are living in troubled times on all fronts. And as Thanksgiving approaches in the US, a time traditionally reserved for gratitude, it begs the question – what do we have to be thankful for?

Gratitude is a complex concept, especially in a world where abundance is not distributed equally. As we reflect on what we have been given and what has been taken from us, it becomes clear that our materialistic lifestyles are unsustainable and are taking a toll on the planet. The cracks are starting to show, both in our climate and in our society.

This year has been particularly challenging, with record-high carbon emissions, political upheaval, and the failure to meet crucial climate targets. The urgency of the situation is palpable, yet it seems like the adults have gone silent, leaving the younger generation to bear the burden of a future rife with uncertainty.

Despite the challenges we face, there are still things to be thankful for. The food on our tables, the defenders of justice and truth, the artists and creators who inspire us, and the wisdom of our elders. The dreams of young people, the beauty of nature, and the resilience of the Earth are all reasons to be grateful.

Amidst the chaos, there are signs of hope. Indigenous communities, who have long been stewards of the land, are raising their voices and showing us a way forward. The cracks in our society are not just weaknesses, but opportunities to build something new and sustainable.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it’s important to remember that we are not alone. Together, we can work towards a better future, one where compassion and resilience are our guiding principles. So, as we gather for Thanksgiving, let us hold hands and be the bridge to a world that is worth fighting for.

Happy Thanksgiving.
