Enhancing Video Calls with Qualcomm’s AI Relighting Feature

If you’re anything like me, video calls play a vital role in today’s modern life. Whether it’s checking in with work colleagues remotely or staying connected with loved ones, video calls are essential. However, one common challenge I face is lighting. Achieving well-exposed facial lighting without a distracting background can be difficult, especially when using underwhelming laptop webcams or phone selfie cameras.

Qualcomm has introduced a solution to this issue with its new AI Relighting feature, available on the Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile chip. This innovative technology uses artificial intelligence to add a virtual, customizable light source, ensuring that your face is perfectly exposed during video calls.

Having had the opportunity to test this feature at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit in Maui, I can attest to its effectiveness. The AI Relighting feature creates a realistic lighting effect that could easily fool others on the call into thinking it’s coming from a real source. The ability to adjust the light source’s position within the frame enhances this realism.

Furthermore, Qualcomm offers a range of customization options with the AI Relighting feature. Users can adjust the intensity and color temperature of the light, as well as choose from six different colors. Whether you prefer classic white and yellow tones or want to experiment with red or blue hues, the option is available.

While AI Relighting may not seem like a groundbreaking feature, its practical application in improving video calling experiences is evident. I am eagerly anticipating its integration into the next generation of Android phones, as it promises to enhance the overall video call quality significantly.

As part of the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, many upcoming Android flagship devices will have the option to incorporate AI Relighting. It will ultimately be up to individual manufacturers to decide whether to adopt this feature, but I am hopeful that at least a few will recognize its value and include it in their devices.

For those interested in exploring other features of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, there are additional exciting capabilities that I am looking forward to trying out.
