A Tragic Shooting Incident in Garfield Ridge

On Thanksgiving night, a man lost his life in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood of Chicago. Shockingly, no one called 911 for approximately ten minutes after the fatal shooting, as revealed by Chicago police. The area had previously been monitored by the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system, which could have alerted authorities to such incidents in real-time. However, Mayor Brandon Johnson made the controversial decision to disconnect the system in September 2024.

Shortly after midnight, a concerned caller reported discovering a man with gunshot wounds in the 5100 block of South Luna Avenue, mentioning hearing gunfire and a woman screaming ten minutes prior. Sadly, no other reports of the gunshots were made to emergency services.

Upon police arrival, they found a 27-year-old man critically injured on the ground, succumbing to his wounds later at Stroger Hospital. According to a witness, the assailant approached the victim on foot, brandished a firearm, and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene. Law enforcement recovered a weapon and nine shell casings as evidence and are currently interviewing a person of interest.

Ald. Silvana Tabares, representing the 23rd Ward encompassing the neighborhood, vehemently opposed Mayor Johnson’s decision to dismantle ShotSpotter. She criticized the move, labeling it as “radical, reckless, and dangerous” for the community. Despite widespread support for the system’s retention from city council members, residents, and law enforcement officials, the Mayor stood firm in his choice.

As of September 23, 2024, ShotSpotter ceased operations in Chicago, ending its vital role in identifying gunfire incidents in high-crime areas. The technology had been instrumental in pinpointing shooting locations with precision, aiding authorities in prompt responses to such incidents.

CWBChicago continues to monitor cases of shootings in areas previously covered by ShotSpotter without corresponding 911 calls. These instances highlight the importance of technological aids in enhancing public safety and reducing response times in critical situations.

Editor’s note: Case #13 was removed from this list on May 21, 2025, following the Medical Examiner’s determination that the individual’s death was a result of suicide.
