If you’re expecting a baby between 2025 and 2028, you might be pleased to learn about the new “Trump Accounts” initiative introduced as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill signed by President Trump in July 2025. These accounts aim to provide families with a head start in building long-term financial stability by giving children an early opportunity to benefit from future investment growth.

The concept behind Trump Accounts is simple: babies born between 2025 and 2028 are eligible to receive a $1,000 government contribution towards their account. Parents have the option to contribute up to $5,000 annually, with all funds being invested in U.S. stock-market index funds like the S&P 500. According to projections from the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers, a child born in 2026 could potentially have $303,800 by age 18 and $1.09 million by age 28, assuming average market returns. Even without additional contributions, the account could grow to $5,800 by 18 and $18,100 by 28.

When the child reaches 18, the Trump Account converts to a traditional IRA, subject to taxes upon withdrawal. However, there is a potential tax-saving strategy through a Roth IRA conversion. By converting the account to a Roth IRA and staying within the 0% income tax bracket, families could potentially enjoy completely tax-free withdrawals after age 59.5. It’s important to note that the IRS has not officially confirmed whether Roth conversions will be permitted for Trump Accounts.

In addition to Trump Accounts, parents have other savings strategies at their disposal to secure their children’s financial future. Opening a Roth IRA for kids, contributing to a 529 college savings plan, or establishing regular brokerage or custodial accounts are all viable options. It’s also crucial to educate children about financial literacy, including budgeting, investing, and saving.

Trump Accounts serve as a valuable tool for families looking to jumpstart their children’s financial journey. By combining smart tax practices, consistent contributions, and financial education, parents can help their kids establish a solid money management foundation for a secure future.
