In a rather audacious miscalculation, Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump have opted to antagonize Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), a figure widely recognized for his pragmatic approach to politics.
Unlike the more extreme elements of the political landscape, Kelly is characterized as a centrist Democrat, which begs the question: why did Trump and Hegseth believe they could make an example out of him? The answer, it seems, lies in their underestimation of his resolve.

In a recent press conference, Sen. Kelly took the opportunity to address Hegseth directly:
With the tacit approval of Republican senators, he has surrounded himself with individuals like the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, who follow orders without question. Trump and Hegseth appear more focused on garnering attention than upholding the rule of law. I learned via Twitter that the Secretary of Defense was initiating an investigation against me.
This is the same Secretary of Defense who has been deemed historically unqualified for the role since his nomination.
The same individual who allegedly ordered a second strike against shipwreck survivors in the Caribbean. If anyone should be held accountable in a public forum, it is Pete Hegseth.
It is a perilous time for the United States when the president and his loyalists leverage power to intimidate senators who dare to speak out. This isn’t just about me or the individuals featured in that video. It’s a message aimed at veterans, civil servants, military personnel, elected officials, and all Americans contemplating speaking up: silence is golden, or else.
Sen. Kelly seems acutely aware of the tactics employed by Trump and Hegseth, and he is resolutely standing his ground.
In a compelling comparison, Sen. Kelly reflected on his own experiences, drawing parallels between his challenges and those faced by Trump.
