Amazon Prime Video’s highly anticipated “God of War” TV series has made a significant addition to its creative team with the announcement that veteran director Frederick E.O. Toye will be directing the first two episodes of the epic video game adaptation. This news, confirmed by Variety, comes as Amazon has also greenlit two seasons of the series, with casting currently underway.
The series will bring to life the story of Kratos, starting with the events of the 2018 “God of War” game. The official logline describes the show as following the journey of father and son Kratos and Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Kratos aims to impart godly wisdom to his son, while Atreus strives to teach his father the ways of humanity.
Frederick E.O. Toye brings a wealth of experience to the project, having previously won an Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series for his work on FX’s “Shogun” in 2024. His impressive resume includes popular shows like “Westworld,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Watchmen,” as well as previous work on Amazon series such as “The Boys” and “Fallout.” Toye is represented by CAA and Sloane Offer.
The journey of bringing “God of War” to the small screen has been a long one, with the series originally greenlit by Amazon in 2022. After original showrunner Rafe Judkins departed the project in October 2024, Ronald D. Moore took over showrunning duties. Moore, under his production company Tall Ship Productions, serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series.
Joining Moore as executive producers are a talented team including Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Co-executive producers on the series include Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham. “God of War” is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions.
The news of Frederick E.O. Toye’s involvement was first reported by Deadline, adding to the excitement surrounding the upcoming adaptation of this beloved video game franchise. With a talented team behind the scenes and an acclaimed director leading the charge, “God of War” is shaping up to be a must-watch series for fans and newcomers alike.
