Redefine Access to the Arts With the MA in Art Education at the University of Arkansas

The University of Arkansas School of Art is proud to offer the MA in Art Education program, designed to prepare students for careers in teaching and creating within schools, museums, and community arts organizations. This two-year, tuition-free program welcomes individuals at all stages of their careers, from seasoned educators to those new to the field.

The program focuses on blending theory, research, and socially engaged practice to provide students with a comprehensive education. Through a combination of rigorous coursework and hands-on learning experiences, students develop creative teaching approaches, analytical skills, and contribute to academic research in the field. The interdisciplinary nature of the program sets it apart, welcoming applicants from various creative backgrounds such as performance, applied arts, museums, and K-12 education.

Students have the opportunity to participate in labs and initiatives like the Center for the Study of Childhood Art and the Arkansas Art Educator Art Lab, which offer professional development opportunities. Additionally, students can engage in programs like the Ink and Inspiration: A Student Writing Retreat and the Art Education Symposium. Collaborative workshops with visiting artists, like the recent residency with Nigerian artist Peju Layiwola, provide unique hands-on experiences for students.

The MA in Art Education program is deeply connected to the Northwest Arkansas arts ecosystem, collaborating with schools and community programs to create inclusive projects. Thanks to support from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation, all MA students receive a tuition waiver, graduate assistantship, stipend, and access to funding and collaboration opportunities with visiting scholars.

Upon completion of the program, alumni pursue careers in K-12 education, museum programming, nonprofit leadership, higher education, and more. Many graduates also go on to pursue doctoral programs. As the demand for art educators continues to grow, the MA in Art Education program at the University of Arkansas provides a dynamic space for students to grow with the support and mentorship they need.
