CHICAGO — Tragedy struck near the Howard CTA station in Rogers Park on Wednesday afternoon as one man lost his life and two others sustained injuries in a shooting incident, as reported by Chicago police. This unfortunate event took place on a block that has unfortunately witnessed several instances of violence throughout the year.
According to CPD, the three victims were on the sidewalk in the 1600 block of West Howard when shots were fired at them from a passing vehicle. However, surveillance footage reviewed by CWBChicago revealed that the three men were actually walking east on Howard Street when a dispute between them escalated, resulting in them falling to the ground.
Tragically, a 29-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was pronounced dead. An 18-year-old man who was shot in the chest managed to run a short distance before collapsing near Gale Community Academy. CPD officers discovered a handgun in his possession. Fortunately, he was reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, a 20-year-old man arrived at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston via private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest and was listed in critical condition.
Ald. Maria Hadden (49th) reassured the public in a Facebook post that the shooting did not disrupt CTA train operations in the area.
This incident marks the 23rd, 24th, and 25th shooting victims in Rogers Park for the week, adding to a total of six individuals shot in the neighborhood this month. Prior to this tragic event, the most recent shooting occurred at the Morse CTA station on Sunday evening, resulting in a fatality.
