The upcoming Supermoon event on December 4, 2025, promises to be a spectacular sight for skywatchers all over the world. This Cold Supermoon will rise with enhanced size and brightness due to its close proximity to Earth during perigee. As the last full Moon of the year, this event is a must-see for astronomy enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Supermoons occur when the Moon’s elliptical orbit brings it closer to Earth than usual, resulting in a larger and brighter appearance in the night sky. This particular Supermoon will be at a distance of 357,219 kilometers from Earth, making it 8 percent larger and 16 percent brighter than an average full Moon. This makes it a prime opportunity for capturing stunning moonrise photographs.

The phenomenon of supermoons is a natural consequence of the Moon’s orbital path around Earth. The Moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular, leading to variations in distance throughout its journey. When the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth, known as perigee, during a full Moon phase, it is referred to as a supermoon.

While supermoons are relatively common, occurring around 13 times a year, each event offers a unique viewing experience. Factors like the gravitational pull of the Sun and the evolving relationship between Earth and the Moon contribute to the varying distances of perigees. At its closest approach, the Moon can appear up to 30 percent larger and 14 percent brighter in the sky.

In addition to supermoons, there is also a phenomenon known as a micromoon, which occurs when the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. While micromoons may not attract as much attention as supermoons, they are equally fascinating to observe.
