Reflecting on National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

Each year, countless Americans face injury or tragedy due to the reckless actions of drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. As we observe National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, we extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones and reaffirm our dedication to combating substance abuse on our roadways. Our goal remains clear: to safeguard American lives and foster a nation that is safe, healthy, and resilient.

The Dangers of Impaired Driving

Substance use not only clouds judgment but also impairs reaction times, undermining the decision-making process essential for safe driving. Disturbingly, a life is lost to impaired driving every 42 minutes in America. This sobering statistic motivates my Administration to tackle the substance abuse crisis with urgency and resolve.

Strategic Actions Against Substance Abuse

Since my return to office, I have implemented a series of decisive measures aimed at curtailing the influx of illegal drugs across our borders while bolstering support for law enforcement agencies. Under my guidance, the Office of National Drug Control Policy has intensified its efforts to address substance use disorders and dismantle the criminal networks that perpetuate them. We are channeling hundreds of millions of dollars into initiatives like the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program and the Drug-Free Communities Support Program, which are designed to dismantle drug trafficking operations and restore community safety.

Moreover, my Administration is focused on expanding access to treatment for all Americans struggling with substance use, ensuring that each individual has a clear pathway to recovery. We also continue to collaborate with state partners to raise awareness through high-visibility enforcement campaigns, such as Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Honoring Victims and Committing to Change

This month, we pause to remember the lives lost to impaired driving. We express our gratitude to the brave police officers, first responders, healthcare professionals, and community organizations tirelessly working to avert these tragedies. Above all, we renew our pledge to prevent these senseless losses and remain unwavering in our commitment to prioritize the safety, health, and well-being of the American populace.
