Reflecting on a Diplomatic Milestone in Jerusalem

On December 6, 2017, I made a pivotal decision during my first term by signing a proclamation that recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and initiated the relocation of the United States Embassy to this historic city—a bold move aimed at fostering peace in the Middle East. Fast forward eight years, my Administration reaffirms its dedication to ushering in a new chapter of peace, prosperity, and stability, not just in the Middle East but across the globe.

The Sacred Significance of Jerusalem

Jerusalem has long been a revered city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, celebrated for its profound historical and biblical significance. Since the modern State of Israel was established in 1948, Jerusalem has remained its cultural and religious epicenter, housing the government and embodying the nation’s identity. Yet, for decades, indecisive political leaders hesitated to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital—despite Congressional support—out of a misguided belief that moving our embassy would jeopardize peace efforts. Ironically, this delay in acknowledgment did little to foster peace, proving that sticking to outdated strategies yields only stagnant results. By recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocating our embassy, we embraced a truth that resonates with Israel’s heritage, traditions, and governance. Today, we find ourselves on the brink of a diplomatic breakthrough that could herald a lasting peace throughout the Middle East.

Building on Historical Agreements

My first term was marked by significant advancements towards peace, including the groundbreaking Abraham Accords, which affirmed Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and secured historic peace agreements with several Arab-Muslim nations. These initiatives laid the groundwork for a new era of collaboration and understanding in a historically fractious region.

Renewed Commitment to Global Peace

Since my return to office as the 47th President of the United States, my Administration has continued to build on these extraordinary accomplishments by leading with courage and determination—creating pathways for enduring peace in areas plagued by conflict. I take pride in facilitating a significant peace agreement between the State of Israel and Hamas, which aims to end over two years of intense suffering and loss. This agreement not only seeks the full liberation of all hostages but also promises humanitarian relief to communities devastated by the violence. This landmark deal represents a significant stride toward lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians, ensuring security, stability, and a glimmer of hope for future generations.

A Commitment to Peace Through Strength

As President, I remain steadfast in my commitment to resolving conflicts worldwide. My Administration will persist in advocating for a foreign policy that prioritizes peace through strength, ensuring that we never waver in our pursuit of harmony among nations.
