Sean Popps, a 39-year-old man with a history of arrests, has once again found himself in trouble with the law after allegedly attacking a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Popps has been arrested a total of 12 times this year, with most of the incidents involving trespassing or property damage on or near the hospital’s Streeterville campus. This pattern of behavior dates back to 2020, with multiple arrests each year.

The recent incident occurred on November 2, when Popps reportedly followed a 42-year-old cardiologist into an elevator at the hospital’s parking garage on East Huron Street. Without any provocation, Popps began punching the physician in the head, causing multiple injuries including bruises, abrasions, and hematomas. The attack was described as violent and unprovoked.

Security officers at Northwestern were quick to identify Popps from surveillance footage, noting his extensive history of causing disturbances at the hospital. Despite being on pretrial release for a previous offense, Popps now faces a charge of aggravated battery in a public place.

This case highlights the challenges faced by the criminal justice system in dealing with repeat offenders whose behavior escalates over time. Judge Anthony Calabrese made the decision to detain Popps following the attack, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges against him.

It is crucial for institutions like Northwestern Memorial Hospital to have measures in place to protect staff and visitors from individuals like Popps who pose a threat to the safety and well-being of others. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and security protocols in healthcare settings.
