An Ohio surgeon is facing serious allegations after allegedly forcing abortion pills into his girlfriend’s mouth while she slept, resulting in the termination of her pregnancy. Hassan-James Abbas, a 32-year-old surgical resident at the University of Toledo, reportedly obtained the abortion-inducing pills under his estranged wife’s name from a telemedicine doctor. He then administered the medication to his girlfriend without her consent, leading to the tragic loss of her fetus.
The incident took place last year, when Abbas discovered that his girlfriend was pregnant just two months into their relationship. Upon learning the news, he urged her to get an abortion, but she expressed her desire to keep the pregnancy. Unbeknownst to her, Abbas obtained Mifepristone and Misoprostol, the abortion pills, in his wife’s name from an out-of-state telemedical provider. Days later, his girlfriend began experiencing nausea, which escalated into a horrifying encounter on the night of December 18.
According to reports, Abbas held his girlfriend down and forcibly inserted crushed abortion pills into her mouth, causing her to wake up in a state of shock and distress. She managed to escape to the kitchen and call 911, seeking help after the traumatic ordeal. At the hospital, she was informed that her pregnancy had been terminated, leaving her devastated and in need of medical treatment for vaginal bleeding.
The State Medical Board of Ohio conducted an investigation into the incident, leading to Abbas’ confession that he had researched the medication online and used his wife’s information to obtain it. Despite his admission to altering the administration of the drugs and not following proper instructions, Abbas claimed that his girlfriend had agreed to take the pills. As a result of his actions, Abbas had his medical license suspended and is facing multiple felony charges, including abduction, tampering with evidence, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, and identity fraud.
Abbas was indicted on November 5 and is set to be arraigned on December 19 to face the legal consequences of his actions. The shocking incident has raised concerns about the ethical conduct of medical professionals and the importance of respecting patients’ autonomy and consent in all medical procedures.
