In 2025, the world witnessed a drastic shift in US government policies towards science and research under the administration of President Donald Trump. One of the most symbolic images of this era was that of billionaire Elon Musk, then serving as a special adviser to the President, wielding a chainsaw as a metaphor for the deep cuts to science funding and programmes. From cancelled space missions to the rejection of vital climate change initiatives, the impact on the scientific community was significant.

The dismantling of nearly a century of US leadership in the sciences began swiftly after Trump took office. Orders were signed to halt grants and loans from federal agencies, disrupting thousands of grants overseen by institutions like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The cuts in grants from these agencies amounted to around $3 billion, affecting crucial biomedical research and other scientific endeavors.

Under the leadership of Elon Musk, an independent task force called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was formed to slash government spending. This resulted in job cuts across various government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The impact of these decisions was felt across the scientific community, leading to uncertainty and instability.

The Trump administration’s approach to science extended beyond funding cuts. Pressure was put on universities to align their research with government priorities, and key climate databases and reports were axed or undermined. Public health data tracking drug use, addiction, and mental health were also significantly impacted, leading to layoffs and the elimination of essential public health monitoring programs.

Health policy became chaotic under the leadership of Robert F Kennedy Jr, who promoted vaccine skepticism and made unfounded claims about the causes of autism. The anti-vaccine movement gained traction within the government, eroding trust in public health agencies. Furthermore, NASA’s science budget faced a 47% cut, jeopardizing numerous space missions and scientific endeavors.

The private sector, particularly big tech companies, gained influence under the Trump administration, with executives cozying up to the President and funding extravagant projects. The future of science and research in the US remains uncertain, with potential long-term consequences for the country’s global standing in scientific innovation and progress. The end of the “endless frontier” approach to science funding has raised concerns about the future of critical research and its impact on society and the planet.
