Humans have been making fire for much longer than previously thought, according to a recent discovery. This news sheds light on our ancestors’ ability to stay warm and survive in harsh conditions.

In other news, there is some controversy surrounding the appointment of Tracy Beth Høeg to lead the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. While Høeg has a background in sports medicine and epidemiology, some FDA staffers are concerned about her lack of traditional experience in overseeing such an important center. Her close relationship with FDA Commissioner Marty Makary has also raised eyebrows, as they share skepticism about certain medical treatments.

The recent decision by a CDC committee to no longer recommend hepatitis B vaccination for all newborns has sparked concern among medical experts. This change could lead to an increase in parents declining vaccination for their infants, potentially putting them at risk for other deadly diseases like polio and pertussis.

On a more positive note, new drugs are in development to treat gonorrhea, the second most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection in the US. These new treatments could provide much-needed relief for those infected with the bacteria.

However, the pharmacy industry is facing a crisis due to chronic understaffing and burnout among employees. The situation reached a breaking point in 2023, leading to thousands of pharmacy professionals walking out in what was dubbed “Pharmageddon.” It is crucial for staffing levels to improve to ensure patient care does not suffer.

In other health news, there are concerns about rising premium costs for ACA plans next year, as well as a reaffirmation from the World Health Organization that vaccines do not cause autism. Additionally, Canadian researchers have found an increase in stimulant prescriptions for teenage girls and young women in Ontario.
