on a Friday night, “there’s no way the chief is monitoring traffic stops.” Weitzel added that he sees “no reason why the chief should be involved in something like this unless there’s an attempt to exert influence.”

Markham Mayor Roger Agpawa did not respond to a request for comment. Genius could not be reached for this story.

Markham has been the subject of intense scrutiny in recent years. In 2020, the FBI raided the city’s offices and the homes of several officials in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption and bribery in the city. The investigation is ongoing.

Genius, who has been chief since 2019, has been at the center of controversy before. In 2021, a federal jury found that he and other officers violated the civil rights of a man who was shot by police in 2017. The victim, who survived, was awarded $1.3 million in damages.

Markham officials have not explained why Genius intervened in Muhammad’s case, but the Illinois Attorney General’s Office is reviewing the matter to determine if any laws were broken.

As for Muhammad, he said he will continue his work as a violence interrupter and advocate for criminal justice reform.

“It’s not about what I do. It’s about the people we save,” he said.

“I’ve been in this for a long time, and I ain’t going nowhere.”

On a typical Wednesday, a suburban police chief would usually be found at home or attending a village meeting, not reviewing routine arrests. However, in the case of Markham Police Chief Terry White, things took a strange turn when officers were instructed not to charge a suspect, despite evidence of illegal firearm possession.

According to Markham Police Department paperwork, Chief White allegedly ordered officers not to charge the suspect, whose name was redacted from the report. This directive was so clear that officers did not even bother to seek approval from prosecutors for the arrest.

The situation grew even more peculiar the morning after the incident, when a corporal filed a supplemental report stating that the suspect, identified as Muhammad, was expected to surrender at the Markham Police Department at 8 p.m. to face charges of illegal firearm possession. However, no such charges were ever filed.

In another twist, a report revealed that Muhammad’s vehicle, a Chrysler 300, was returned to the city’s tow contractor’s lot as part of Markham’s “Zero Tolerance Policy.” Yet, when Muhammad failed to surrender as expected, two SUVs arrived at the tow lot around 9:10 p.m. One of the vehicles, Muhammad’s Chrysler 300, left the lot without registration plates, escorted by the SUVs. When a tow company employee inquired about the situation, he was reportedly told to “mind his business.”

Muhammad claimed that he paid for the release of his vehicle, but did not provide any further details or proof of payment when contacted for clarification.

Despite attempts to seek clarification from Markham city officials and Harvey Alderwoman Chapman, no responses were received. Muhammad also did not respond to follow-up questions, stating in a previous interview that he thrives on media attention, whether positive or negative, in order to reach a wide audience for his senate campaign.

This bizarre case raises questions about the handling of criminal matters in Markham and the potential influence of individuals in positions of power. The lack of transparency and accountability in this incident is concerning and warrants further investigation.
