The Aurora Police Department in Colorado has been facing concerns about the activities of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua in the city. Leaked internal emails reveal that the department was aware of TdA’s presence in the area as early as November 2023, but city officials downplayed the situation. The gang has been taking over poorly-maintained apartment complexes in Aurora, with their leader known as “Cookie” being involved in violent crimes.

Despite the department’s knowledge of TdA’s activities, officials were reluctant to acknowledge the extent of the gang’s influence in the city. Frustrated officers within the department expressed their concerns in emails, highlighting the need for proactive measures to address the growing threat. There were reports of patrol units refusing to respond to locations associated with TdA without armored vehicles, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

One email mentioned a list of 120 “vetted” gang members, but the department was struggling to gather more information or cooperation from Homeland Security. The lack of information sharing and proactive measures raised fears among officers that the situation could escalate if not addressed promptly. The emails also revealed that TdA had established its headquarters in Denver due to sanctuary policies and location advantages.

In November 2023, the department was alerted by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement about TdA’s presence in the area. The gang’s involvement in violent crimes, including a brutal assault at the Fitzsimons Place apartment complex, raised concerns among law enforcement officials. The complex was eventually shut down due to code violations attributed to the gang’s activities.

Despite the mounting evidence of TdA’s influence in Aurora, city officials and law enforcement downplayed the situation. The interim police chief denied reports of the gang’s takeover of apartment complexes, while Colorado Governor Jared Polis dismissed concerns as “imagination.” However, leaked emails and incidents involving TdA members point to a more significant issue that needs to be addressed.

The city of Aurora acknowledged the leaked emails and confirmed that there were concerns about TdA’s activities in the city. While emphasizing the need for admissible evidence, the city assured that the police department is actively investigating TdA crimes. The ongoing investigation and efforts to address the gang’s activities reflect the city’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its residents.
