Ford Expands into Battery Storage Business

Amid Ford’s shift away from making large electric vehicles, the automaker is adding a new product line to find a home for its batteries.

Ford announced on Monday that instead of abandoning plans to produce batteries for electric vehicles, it will repurpose its capacity to enter the battery storage market. These storage systems, utilizing cost-effective LFP batteries, will be utilized to power data centers and assist in managing electricity demand on the grid.

The company plans to commence shipping the battery storage systems in 2027 with an annual capacity target of 20GWh.

Ford is following the footsteps of other automakers who have ventured into the battery storage sector. Tesla has been a key player in the market for years, deploying around 10GWh of battery storage every quarter. General Motors also offers a range of home and commercial battery storage solutions.

Lisa Drake, Ford’s vice president of technology platform programs and EV systems, highlighted that the primary focus of the new business will be on commercial grid customers. However, data centers will also be a significant market, followed by potential offerings for home storage products.
