A tragic incident occurred in Chicago last spring when 8-year-old Josiah Hooker lost his life in a fatal shooting. The culprit behind this heartbreaking incident was none other than his own father, Derrick Taylor. Taylor, a 32-year-old man, recently pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident, admitting that he had left a loaded handgun within reach of his children, leading to the accidental death of his son.

Judge Alfredo Maldonado presided over the case and sentenced Taylor to five years in prison. According to state records, Taylor is expected to be released on September 17, 2027, after receiving credit for time served and the standard 50% sentence reduction in Illinois. The charges Taylor pleaded guilty to include being a felon in possession of a firearm and child endangerment causing death.

The tragic events unfolded on March 20, 2025, inside the family’s Greater Grand Crossing home. Prosecutors revealed that Taylor had placed a loaded 9mm pistol behind a television on a low dresser in his bedroom before taking a nap while caring for his children alone. It was during this time that the unimaginable happened.

Taylor woke up to a loud noise around 5:20 p.m. and discovered that his 5-year-old son had accidentally shot Josiah in the back of the head. In a panic, Taylor rushed outside with his gravely injured child, seeking help from neighbors and passersby. Despite the efforts of first responders, Josiah was pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital. The 5-year-old responsible for the accidental shooting also sustained a facial laceration consistent with a graze wound.

As part of his sentence, Taylor will only serve half of the five-year prison term due to the standard 50% sentence reduction and credit for time spent in jail. The tragic loss of Josiah serves as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety and responsible firearm ownership.
