On Dec. 17, 1979, Arthur McDuffie, a Black insurance broker and former Marine, tragically passed away after being brutally beaten by police officers in Miami. This incident sparked riots in Miami in 2000 after the acquittal of the officers involved.
In 1777, France became one of the first nations to officially recognize the independence of the United States.
