Authorities suspect that the tragic stabbing of Bernice Louise Marychurch on an Auckland bus may have been committed by someone she knew. The incident occurred on the Number 74 bus at approximately 2:30 pm this past week.

The alleged perpetrator, 37-year-old Kael Leona, turned himself in to the police on Thursday and appeared in court the following morning to face charges of murder. Acting Detective Inspector Alisse Robertson revealed that there is evidence suggesting a prior connection between the victim and the accused, prompting further investigation into Marychurch’s activities leading up to her untimely death.

Law enforcement is analyzing CCTV footage from various locations in Panmure and Onehunga on the day of the incident, showing the victim interacting with a man at different points throughout the day. Authorities are seeking information from individuals who were present at specific times and locations, including outside Woolworths Onehunga in the morning, on Church Street in Onehunga, and at the Panmure township and bus station in the early afternoon.

Witnesses are urged to come forward if they saw Marychurch and the suspect, who was described as wearing a Niue baseball cap, a camo-colored hooded sweatshirt, light-colored pants, and white shoes, while carrying a black backpack. Marychurch, on the other hand, was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, light-colored shorts, black shoes, and carrying a black satchel.

In response to the tragic incident, Police Minister Mark Mitchell announced increased police presence on public transport in Auckland to ensure the safety of passengers. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the police by calling 105 and referencing case number 241023/8926 or submitting an online report at 105.police.govt.nz.
