A former teacher has been sentenced to prison as a registered sex offender after admitting to charges involving five students.

Matthew Ireland, 27, faced the Napier District Court as parents and school leaders condemned his “appalling, deliberate, and despicable” actions.

Reading a statement on behalf of her son, one mother described how he went from being happy at school to feeling “stupid, vulnerable, and unsafe” due to Ireland’s abuse.

“I was only 9 years old. I didn’t understand anything about sexuality,” the boy said.

“I had no idea that what he was doing was wrong at the time.”

Another mother spoke of the “horrendous” betrayal by a teacher who was “hiding in plain sight” and even socialized with the families of his victims.

“Imagine how my son felt seeing me with his abuser,” she expressed.

Ireland worked at Port Ahuriri School in Napier in 2022 and later became a relief teacher at various schools before joining Havelock North Intermediate in 2023.

He was suspended from Havelock North Intermediate in 2024 after his offenses were revealed.

Admitted to 12 charges

He later pleaded guilty to eight counts of sexual conduct with a child under 12 and four counts of sexual conduct with a child under 16.

The offenses involved five boys.

A statement from the Crown outlined incidents where Ireland was seen with children on his lap during lunch breaks, leading to warnings from senior staff about inappropriate behavior.

During one-on-one sessions, Ireland coerced one boy to undress before touching him inappropriately, while also engaging in similar acts with other boys.

He was eventually reported to the police by a child’s parents two years after the initial incident.

Electronic devices confiscated

Police seized Ireland’s electronic devices 24 hours after his suspension, although some items had been reset, potentially erasing evidence.

Witnesses described Ireland’s actions as grooming, with one parent questioning the extent of his intentions.

Judge Bridget Mackintosh emphasized the lasting impact of Ireland’s offenses on the schools.

Ireland was sentenced to three years in prison and added to the sex offender registry.

Port Ahuriri School principal Glenn France stated that Ireland’s actions caused deep harm and shattered trust within the school community.

Havelock North Intermediate principal Nigel Messervy described the breach of trust as devastating and costly for the school.
