Netflix has officially renewed the Japanese period-action series “Last Samurai Standing” for a second season after its massive success as a global streaming hit. Set in Japan’s Meiji period during the late 19th century, the show follows 292 samurai warriors who compete in a deadly battle at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple for a grand prize of 100 billion yen. The story revolves around protagonist Shujiro Saga, played by Okada Junichi, who enters the dangerous competition to save his ailing wife and child.
The epic battle royale series skyrocketed to the top spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English Series) chart and ranked in the Top 10 in 88 countries. In Japan, it held the coveted No. 1 position for four consecutive weeks, solidifying its status as one of the country’s most popular recent releases. Additionally, “Last Samurai Standing” made history as the first all-Japanese production to be nominated in the best foreign language series category at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Okada Junichi not only stars as the lead actor in the series but also serves as a producer and action choreographer, working closely with director Fujii Michihito. The show boasts an ensemble cast featuring some of Japan’s top talent, including Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, and many more.
Expressing his excitement for the second season, Okada stated, “I’m thrilled to see the global reach of ‘Last Samurai Standing’ and the confirmation of a second season. I can’t wait to dive back into this captivating world and continue the thrilling journey with the production team. We aim to make the next season even more dynamic and action-packed.”
Director Fujii echoed Okada’s sentiments, saying, “I’m delighted by the international success of ‘Last Samurai Standing’ and the official greenlight for a second season. We are committed to making Season 2 even more spectacular than the first.”
Based on Imamura Shogo’s “Ikusagami” novel series, which won the 166th Naoki Prize in 2021, “Last Samurai Standing” is a collaboration between directors Yamaguchi Kento and Yamamoto Toru, with Oshida Kosuke as the producer. The series promises to deliver more thrilling action, compelling drama, and captivating storytelling in its highly anticipated second season.
