Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Killing Grandfather During Phone Theft in Albany Park

A tragic incident in Albany Park has resulted in the sentencing of a man to 20 years in prison for the second-degree murder of 67-year-old grandfather, J. Isabel Castillo. The victim’s family remembers him as a hardworking and loving man who had immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 18 and made a life for himself in Chicago.

Castillo, a long-time resident of Albany Park, was known for his work as a dishwasher, cook, and street vendor selling paletas and elotes in the neighborhood. He was about to celebrate his 68th birthday when his life was cut short by a senseless act of violence.

The tragic incident occurred on June 16, 2024, on the 3100 block of West Lawrence when Richard Orozco, now 42, attempted to steal Castillo’s phone. In the ensuing struggle, Orozco pushed Castillo, causing him to fall and strike his head on the concrete. Despite Castillo’s attempts to retrieve his phone, Orozco callously went through his pockets as the grandfather lay unresponsive on the ground. Castillo passed away two days later as a result of his injuries.

Chicago police utilized video footage and phone data to identify Orozco, leading to his arrest on charges of first-degree murder. Subsequently, a plea deal reduced the charge to second-degree murder, and Orozco was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Judge Alfredo Maldonado. He will be eligible for parole after serving 50% of his sentence, with credit for time served in the county jail.

Castillo’s family described him as a devoted father of four daughters and a doting grandfather to his only granddaughter. He had worked at various establishments in Chicago, including the Chicago Yacht Club, the Saddle and Cycle Club, the Chicago Hilton Hotel, Kelly’s Pub, and the United Center.

The loss of J. Isabel Castillo has left a void in the Albany Park community, where he was a beloved figure known for his hard work and kindness. The sentencing of Richard Orozco serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of senseless violence and theft.
