Robert Downey Jr.’s Broadway debut in the play McNeal has reportedly left the actor feeling like a “mess” after receiving harsh reviews from critics. The Academy Award winner took a leap from the silver screen to the stage, only to have his performance met with disappointment.

According to sources close to Downey, the negative reception of McNeal has taken a toll on the actor. Despite pouring his heart into the project, the play’s failure has dealt a blow to his ego. Insiders revealed that Downey is struggling to come to terms with the criticism and may not return to the theater stage after the show wraps up.

McNeal, written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Ayad Akhtar, centers around Downey’s character Jacob McNeal, an acclaimed novelist grappling with alcoholism and mental illness. The play delves into the complexities of artificial intelligence but failed to impress critics.

Variety described Downey’s debut as “stale and confounding,” while The New York Post called it an “awful” production. Other publications labeled the play a “mixed bag of insight and exhaustion” with “flat characters.” Despite the mixed reviews, the show is scheduled to run until November 24.

Downey, who recently won his first Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer, shared a behind-the-scenes look at McNeal’s opening night on Instagram. The actor reflected on his transition from screen to stage, describing it as “unnaturally natural.”

This isn’t Downey’s first foray into theater; he last appeared on stage over four decades ago in a failed musical that closed on its opening night. Despite the challenges, Downey expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the theater and work with a talented cast and crew.

While the reception to McNeal may not have been what Downey had hoped for, the actor remains committed to giving his best performance every night. His dedication to the craft and determination to improve will undoubtedly shape his future endeavors in the entertainment industry.
