The ocean is a vital resource that plays a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. It not only provides us with half of the oxygen we breathe but also absorbs 30% of our carbon emissions and helps regulate the planet’s climate. By 2030, it is projected to support a $3.2 trillion Blue Economy. Despite the importance of the ocean, many innovative solutions aimed at addressing key challenges such as coastal resilience, coral restoration, and marine pollution cleanup often fail to progress beyond the pilot stage.

Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, the co-founder and ocean lead at Okhtapus, is determined to change this trend. Okhtapus, named after the Persian word for octopus, has developed a model that aims to bridge the gap between innovators with proven solutions, cities and ports in need of these solutions, and funders seeking impactful projects. The ultimate goal is to create a platform where successful projects can thrive and make a real difference in coastal areas and island nations.

One of Okhtapus’ key initiatives is the Global Replicator, set to launch in 2026. This program will bring together groups of proven innovators to collaborate on important projects in specific locations, such as port cities or island communities facing similar challenges. By focusing on late-stage startups and scale-ups, Okhtapus aims to identify solutions that are ready to be replicated and scaled up with the right funding and partnerships.

Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy brings a wealth of experience to his role at Okhtapus, having spent two decades at the intersection of climate resilience and policy. His previous work with the Obama administration’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, the Resilient Cities Network, and the World Ocean Council has equipped him with the knowledge and expertise needed to drive meaningful change in the ocean conservation space.

Looking ahead, Stewart envisions a future where funders are actively engaged in supporting impactful projects and the system is conducive to driving positive change. By pushing for faster progress and scaling up proven solutions, Okhtapus aims to create a more sustainable and resilient future for our oceans. As Stewart puts it, the key challenge lies in accelerating the pace of change to address critical tipping points and ensure a healthier future for our planet’s most precious resource.
