Kharkiv:

“Vovchansk, an industrial town near the Russian border, has been nearly wiped out by a brutal Russian onslaught,” said Mayor Tamaz Gambarashvili.

Drone footage from the Ukrainian military shows a desolate landscape of ruins stretching for miles. The destruction has only worsened since then, with the city’s center being leveled by continuous shelling.

According to analysis by Bellingcat, 60% of Vovchansk’s buildings have been completely destroyed, with an additional 18% partially ruined. The city center, north of the Vovcha River, has suffered the most extensive damage.

AFP and Bellingcat have collaborated to document the rapid obliteration of Vovchansk, revealing the human cost of the conflict.

One Ukrainian officer compared the pace of destruction in Vovchansk to that of Bakhmut, a city in the Donbas region known for intense fighting. He emphasized the shockingly swift devastation that occurred in Vovchansk.

Before the war, Vovchansk had a population of around 20,000 and a bustling community with schools, hospitals, and factories. The city’s rich history and vibrant life have now been reduced to memories.

Following a Russian invasion in 2022, Vovchansk was quickly captured but then liberated by Ukrainian forces. The subsequent Russian offensive in May led to widespread devastation and displacement.

The residents who managed to escape recall the horrors of the bombings and the desperate struggle for survival. Families were torn apart, homes destroyed, and lives shattered in a matter of days.

Despite the tragedy, the spirit of resilience and hope remains among the survivors, who are determined to rebuild and remember their beloved city, now lost to war.

As the conflict continues, the people of Vovchansk are left grappling with the profound impact of the war on their lives, their families, and their future.

Through the chaos and destruction, stories of loss, survival, and determination emerge, painting a vivid portrait of a city torn apart by war.

As the world watches, the people of Vovchansk stand resilient, united in their shared history and their unwavering spirit in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
