While most places close their doors on Christmas Day, there are a few exceptions to keep in mind.
Here’s a helpful guide to what will and won’t be open on Christmas Day.
Need a last-minute Christmas gift?
Christmas Day is one of the four restricted trading days in New Zealand, meaning that most retail shops will be closed. However, if you’re in need of a last-minute gift, there are still a few options available.
Many petrol stations remain open as essential services and often carry small gift items like chocolates, gift cards, and novelty items. Pharmacies also tend to have gift options such as candles and skincare sets, but it’s a good idea to check their holiday hours first.
Don’t feel like cooking Christmas dinner?
If you’d rather not cook or if your Christmas dinner plans go awry, there are still food options available.
While major supermarkets like Woolworths, New World, and Pak’nSave are closed on Christmas Day, dairies and fruit shops are allowed to stay open. Fast food chains like KFC, McDonald’s, Domino’s, and Pizza Hut will also be open. Local takeaways and fish and chip shops are another option, but be sure to check their holiday hours.
Restaurants and cafes may also be open for a sit-down meal, but keep in mind that a 15% public holiday surcharge may apply. Some establishments may offer special Christmas menus for the occasion.
Looking for a bottle shop?
If you need to stock up on alcohol for Christmas Day, be sure to do so ahead of time as no takeaway alcohol is sold or supplied on the day itself.
Getting around on Christmas?
Public transport will operate on a reduced timetable, with bus and ferry services typically running on weekend schedules. Check your local council’s website for holiday timetables. Ubers and taxis will be available, but expect fewer cars and potentially higher prices.
Major airports will be open on Christmas Day, with flights still operating.
Activities on Christmas?
Services-based businesses like hairdressers may be open, but it’s best to confirm their hours in advance. If you’re looking for entertainment, some HOYTS Cinemas will be open on Christmas Day in select locations. Churches across New Zealand will also be hosting Christmas Masses and carol services to celebrate the holiday.
