David Montgomery, the Detroit Lions running back, is set to play on Christmas Day despite being listed as questionable due to an illness. Montgomery, who is in his second season with the Lions after signing in 2023, had his availability in question for the matchup against the Vikings.

NFL Network’s Mike Garofalo reported that Montgomery is expected to play after sitting out Tuesday’s practice and only participating in a limited capacity the following day. The running back, who is under contract with the team through 2027, has been dealing with social media speculation about his long-term future with the team. Montgomery liked an Instagram comment suggesting he should request a trade after the season, raising questions about his commitment to the Lions.

In a recent press conference, Lions coach Dan Campbell praised Montgomery for his professionalism in handling a reduced workload. Despite not having more than 10 carries in a game since November, Montgomery has still managed to contribute with 140 touches for 649 yards and eight touchdowns. However, Jahmyr Gibbs has emerged as Detroit’s primary back with 207 carries for 1,102 yards and 13 scores.

Campbell acknowledged that Montgomery is a talented player who wants to contribute more to the team, and the coaching staff is exploring ways to involve him more in the offense. The outcome of the Lions-Vikings game could potentially determine the NFC North title, adding further significance to Montgomery’s performance on Christmas Day.

Overall, Montgomery’s dedication to the team and his willingness to adapt to changing roles have earned him praise from his coach and teammates. As the holiday game approaches, all eyes will be on Montgomery to see how he performs and potentially impacts the outcome of the crucial matchup.
