A call was made to the police around 10.50pm yesterday, reporting that a man and a woman were attacking the driver near the port in Port Chalmers.
Senior Sergeant Mark Crawford commended the quick response of the public, who not only tended to the victim but also provided valuable information on the suspects’ whereabouts.
“The attack on the taxi driver was a cowardly act that does not reflect the values of our community,” said Crawford. “The public’s willingness to assist someone in distress is truly commendable.”
Although the driver was not physically harmed, he was understandably shaken by the incident. Thanks to the information provided by the public, the police were able to locate and arrest the male and female suspects at a property in Port Chalmers around 1.40am today.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Dunedin Youth Court to face charges of assault with intent to harm. Police investigations are ongoing, and anyone with additional information regarding the assault is encouraged to contact the authorities at 105, quoting reference number P064914742.
