Guest Opinion: 7 Steps To Make A Positive Impact Today

Brett Jenks, CEO of the global regenerative development non-profit Rare.org, recently shared valuable advice for individuals looking to make a positive impact on the environment, particularly through their financial choices. In a recent episode of “Sustainability In Your Ear” with Earth911’s Mitch Ratcliffe, Brett highlighted seven key actions that individuals can take to contribute to environmental sustainability.

First and foremost, Brett emphasized the importance of voting, especially for those in the United States. Casting a vote is a crucial step in supporting environmental policies and initiatives. Beyond voting, Brett outlined seven actionable steps that individuals can take to make a difference.

One of the simplest yet impactful actions is adopting a plant-rich diet. By reducing meat and dairy consumption, individuals can not only improve their health but also reduce their carbon footprint. Additionally, Brett recommended purchasing carbon offsets as a way to support tree planting and other eco-friendly initiatives.

For homeowners, installing solar panels is a significant step towards renewable energy usage. The initial investment in solar panels pays off in the long run, both financially and environmentally. For renters, exploring renewable energy credits or community solar programs can provide access to clean energy solutions.

Another important action is minimizing food waste. By planning meals and reducing food waste, individuals can help combat the global issue of food wastage, which has significant environmental consequences. Electrifying vehicles and flying less frequently are also key actions to reduce personal carbon footprints.

Lastly, Brett highlighted the importance of sharing environmental actions with others. By engaging in social conversations and leading by example, individuals can inspire others to make positive changes for the environment. Additionally, Brett encouraged donations to Rare.org to support projects such as restoring coastal fisheries and empowering smallholder farmers in the Global South.

In conclusion, making conscious choices in daily life can have a significant impact on the environment. Whether it’s through diet, energy consumption, or social engagement, individuals have the power to contribute to a more sustainable future. By following Brett’s advice and taking action, each person can play a part in creating a healthier planet for future generations.
