Gun violence erupted once again on the streets of River North, with gunmen firing at least 50 shots on a street corner, resulting in the death of one man and critical injuries to three others. This marks the third mass shooting on the Near North Side since July, all of which have been linked to the area’s nightlife districts.
According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department, the incident took place in the 400 block of North LaSalle Street around 2:35 a.m. Sunday. Four victims were found with gunshot wounds after four male gunmen approached them on foot and opened fire as they were entering a yellow Lamborghini SUV in a nearby parking lot. The gunmen quickly fled the scene after the shooting.
Officers arrived at the scene to find one victim inside the vehicle, two others lying on the street, and a fourth victim nearby. Immediate first aid was administered, including chest seals and tourniquets, with CPR being performed on one of the victims. Tragically, a 34-year-old man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other victims, aged 35, 36, and 43, were listed in critical condition with gunshot wounds.
Dozens of shell casings were discovered scattered around the intersection of LaSalle Street and Hubbard Street, indicating the intensity of the gunfire. A witness reported seeing four men exiting a minivan and heading towards the parking lot just before the shooting occurred. Investigators are now working to determine the involvement of these individuals in the incident.
As police worked to secure the crime scene, they were forced to intervene in fights among bystanders both near the scene and outside Northwestern Memorial Hospital. This incident follows a previous shooting in the same parking lot last month, highlighting the escalating violence in the area.
Records show a concerning increase in gun violence on the Near North Side this year, with 46 people shot so far compared to 29 during the same period in 2024. The spike in shootings underscores the urgent need for effective measures to address the underlying causes of violence in the community.
Despite the alarming trend, no arrests have been made in connection with any of the mass shootings on the Near North Side. As the investigation continues, it is imperative for law enforcement and community leaders to work together to prevent further acts of senseless violence in the area.
