Celebrating the Pledge of Allegiance: A Reflection on National Unity
Today, as a Nation, we come together to commemorate the Pledge of Allegiance—a profound and impactful declaration that binds every citizen beneath the watchful eyes of one God and our cherished flag of red, white, and blue. On this National Pledge of Allegiance Day, I call upon every American to reaffirm their commitment to our Flag, our legacy, and the enduring principles that have guided our Republic for nearly 250 years.
The Historical Significance of the Pledge
Since its inception in 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance has served as a cornerstone of American identity. Its eloquent words provide a collective expression of duty—reminding students, civic leaders, and new citizens that they are integral players in the grand narrative of America. By voicing this pledge, citizens not only profess their loyalty to our Flag but also to the values it represents: freedom, the rule of law, the sanctity of life, and the obligation to serve our communities and country.
A Steadfast Reminder Through Trials
In times of war and economic fluctuations, the Pledge has consistently reinforced the commitments that each citizen undertakes. Its verses have rallied soldiers defending freedom overseas, inspired Americans to protect our constitutional way of life at home, and fortified the bonds of patriotism that weave through communities across the nation. Each generation recites the Pledge with the understanding that honoring the Flag equates to honoring the Nation it represents.
Protecting the Symbol of American Citizenship
Today, my Administration stands firm in upholding the value of American citizenship and the respect due to the American Flag. Last summer, I enacted an Executive Order aimed at safeguarding the dignity of our Stars and Stripes. This includes strict accountability measures for acts of Flag desecration linked to violence and lawlessness—because those who disdain our Flag often harbor deeper resentments toward the history, heritage, and heroes it venerates. Furthermore, we are taking steps to revoke visas, residency, and naturalization for foreign nationals who desecrate the banner under which countless American heroes have fought and died. We will not tolerate open disrespect for our Flag from those who harbor animosity toward our country; our commitment to defending the sacred heritage that unites Americans remains unwavering.
Renewing Our Commitment on National Pledge of Allegiance Day
On this National Pledge of Allegiance Day, let us renew our dedication to the ideals that define the United States and to the Flag that embodies our collective destiny: one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
